Welcome!
My name is Rex Krueger and like many of you, I am human. This, alongside my love for hand tool woodwork and filmmaking inspired me to start the RUclips series "Woodwork for Humans". It has been over 5 years since that journey began and I have somehow managed to amass a collection of beginner friendly projects, write two books, start a tool company and cultivate an incredible community of fellow learners who inspire one another as much as myself. I hope you will consider learning along with us and as always:
Thanks for Watching.

"Harvesting" Green Wood from the Side of the Road
This guys doin better then my woodworking teacher...yikes
Buddy, your fly was down.
What if there was a second plane
Not sure if you will see this but what was the small chisel you used ? Could you maybe show it on a short i think i have the same one in need of restoring
We call it, 'common sense'.
I like these tips! I may try to figure out a way to use the concept in sheetmetal.
...patience is hard though 😕
My arriss is uncomfortable in this heat.
For some reason all the Rex shorts sounds like it’s blasting out my speakerphone and not my headphones.
When you said "mortises are in the right spot" I was noticing that they were not symetrical. Then the reveal. Nice joke! I bet it wasn't funny on the moment. Woodworking is dealing with our errors but these do not forgive. Sometimes even after checking we still make them. I will give it a go at this gauge. Probably the one I need... Thanks for the inspiration.
On the way to build my first ''real'' workbench here (2'-0''x5'-0'') (I know it's really small but perfect to me since I just have 14'-0'' x 8'-0'' place). Thanks a lot for your advice. I really forgot I could REALLY need a planner stop until I generally make everything with a hand planner to make less noise (and I begin to be more effective with it than an electric one) I'm gonna make hand made vices and side vices in hard wood. Just trying to make my first screw and bolt in wood but it's getting frustrating because standard dowels are 7/8 instead of 1'' but I'm making a jig to make them fast in the future since I always find these 7/8'' dowels for free. Gonna try to make diagonal centre tenons to be sure it won't wobble around and lock them with simple screws so I can dismantle them easily. The top is from an old commercial door in cherry jointed inside 2'' Pretty sure I'm gonna mess it up somewhere but... Meh the perfect bench is always the last one you made... Until... You find out something else that annoy you while working.
Is it the same procedure when the grain is vertical, such as when you're doing this on the end of the board as opposed to the edge?
"they are really usefull for tricky grain" Great, now i have to build something again. Jokes beside, i really want to build an infill for a long time, i pretty like them.
I inherited two of these from my late grandfathers tools after my grandmother passed away. I have been putting off restoring them (they work fabulously, they just have lot of dusty surface rust. I might just need to pull these out to give them another try.
It's much more fun telling the truth and watching her fume.
Wait what? Why did the wood splinter so bad if there was a saw cut on the left and right side? And why did that one big splinter have the pencil line ob it?
The chisel and mallet strike aren't absolutely perfectly straight on, the waste can hit the sides on its way out. He was also showing how a strong strike is not ideal
Always have to look at how grain is running especially on wider notches. Sometimes you can't tell so it better to take smaller bites. If you are very concerned saw down to the last quarter inch and chop out. Then finish sawing down and nibble down the rest of the way.
Rex's technique would be more effective if e used chisel that fit between the added saw lines.Striking up is best insurance.
Always film your crimes Rex
Thank you Sir. Owe you a lot. Thank you again🎉
Soon the commenters swarm: you didn't do that right, you did that with too much of this, do this do that, doesn't this guy have power tools.. etc etc.. :D
Wow, that's exactly what it's like to be me. You're psychic.
@@RexKrueger Well, I'm unemployed, got a lot free time, sometimes I spent good amount on your shorts comment section. I've noticed that the commenters here differ VERY MUCH from the commenters in normal formats. It's pretty wild sometimes.. Also I'm pretty baked sometimes (like now), so the psychic part could be somewhat true :D
I was waiting for you to quote Quinn Dunkey
Man, when you see what the peeps get up to on utube, the ones "teaching" the idea that some average joe didn't know isn't at all unlikely.
If your tool is very sharp its safe, dull tools cause more accidents
lovely makeup! you look stunning 😊😊
Got mine made and it turned out fine. Used a Ryoba saw for all the cuts. All cuts except the long rip cuts for the bottom part of the saw turned out clean. The long rips were just messy - 3" depth of wood and 20" or so long. Of no real consequence as those surfaces don't connect with anything else. If i'd have been smart i would have made the bottom 5 1/2 inches wide to give me 1/4 inch each side for cleanup from messy rips. I'd also have used a longer piece of dowel in the bottom - 11" was a bit short. Sticking closer to the plans would have been smarter! The one smart thing i did - work from the bottom up. That way if you mess up, you can slide the whole thing down and cleanup any errors. The fitting of this type of vise to a bench is way easier than many other types of vises. This is a darn good vise.
So what happens to the moisture? How does it escape?
I felt that sorry buddy😭
I don't want to steal anyone's thunder, but I found this video that was made in 1975. It is a 79 year old mountain man that makes chairs, from start to finish. I wish it showed more detail. ruclips.net/video/V7YLX5N6Hlo/видео.htmlfeature=shared
The same Metal stamping dies can almost always be used to make mirrored versions of the same part. For this part in particular they just had to make 2 of the folds in the opposite directions, which as simple as flipping the part upside down before it goes into each of those dies. I wouldn’t expect a random company to be willing to alter their manufacturing process for a small number of units for free but Any supplier that you have a good relationship with should be willing to do this for you for little to no extra cost. It keeps loyal customers loyal.
But it adds more vertices
That's the way I am doing it
Great video! My only comment is that the pine at Home Depot is not that great a bargain. It works out to between $3.30 and almost $4.00 per board foot for common boards. You can get furniture grade pine at hardwood lumber yards for around $4.00 per board foot or maybe even less and I would rather work with it.
I entirely agree that a draw knife used properly is very safe, but oddly enough, I can fully touch the draw knife to my chest/belly pulling it back my elbows and arms allow me to extend fully, I guess people have different range of motion
Thanks for sharing.
I made a couple of them from an old leather guitar strap.
Hi Rex, some time has passed (two years), and you did move shop and a lot of other stuff, but I searched and didn't find the video where you made this chair. Is it going to happen?
How thick are the teeth on the screw-in one? I have been needing a stop to help me plane a lot of 1/8""-1/4" strips, and I am wondering if I can flatten it with a hammer and then screw it into my bench? I cannot, for the life of me, fine anything to use as a stop for extremely thin stock that doesn't snap.
You’d just reverse all the bend breaks. Why would it be more expensive?
The fighting with Dad bit. Yep. 😂
I can just hear eoin reardon talk
Ill agree Rex. The sound of your first restored hand place taking a ribbon, is addicting. My first was a Craftsman 4 by Sargent. Honestly the only plane I've bought new is a Stanley low angle jack, and its my shooting plane. All the rest (and most of my other tools for that matter have been restored from fleas, Ebay, and garage sales. I enjoy restoring the tools just as much as using them.
Great stuff. I don't usually buy plans but you deserve all of the support and compensation for the time, passion and generosity you give to our community, so I bought plans and am happy I did. Also why did you switch into an Australian accent when you said "...video on the description...". Through me off guard! Lol 😂
I have a plastic miter box it was very inexpensive and works well.
Pretty sure thats a Japanese pull saw not designed for sawing back and forth hence why its a pull saw
Is it just me or does this guy look like the Bald look alike of Stevo 😅
I love it when I can give Rex a tip lol I have had to peen over many bits of metal and different metals for numerous projects. Sometimes red hot. I learned to not try to do this with only one or two hits; but especially with softer metals, or red hot. If you hit your rivets hard, you can bend or mushroom the part where you don't need or want it bent. If you do light taps, you will not bend the rivet but just make successive dents, that only mushroom the end where you are hitting it. I used to repair digital and mechanical scales, some had brass weights with brass bolts through them. The bolt ends needed to be peened over, and it would only take one hard hit with a hammer and the bolt is bent and needs to be replaced, or removed and straightened. I always used a small hammer and light taps and never had an issue. Takes a minute or so longer, but does a better job. Steel isn't so easy to bend but it does! Sometimes I need to make a "bolt". I will take a length of threaded stock and either put a couple nuts on it and clamp, or wrap with cloth and clamp in vise. Tap tap tap with a small ball/peen hammer on the end, and in a minute you will not be able to back a nut off that end.... making a "bolt". Will not damage the nuts or bend the threaded stock, using light taps on the end. FYI
Hearing such chipper delivery throughout the video, then you get really REALLY excited at the 'ill be dead' is just a whole mood.
Yes, well some of us don’t have real leather just sitting around
